Pengalaman Ibu Primipara Dalam Melakukan Perawatan Bayi Baru Lahir di Tzu Chi Hospital
Abstract
Background: Newborn care is an important aspect of supporting infant growth and development while preventing health problems during the neonatal period. Primiparous mothers often face challenges in adapting to their new role as primary caregivers because they have no previous experience in caring for infants. Exploring their experiences is important to understand the adaptation process and the support needed during the transition to motherhood.
Objectives:This study aimed to explore the experiences of primiparous mothers in caring for newborns at Tzu Chi Hospital.
Methods: A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was conducted. Six primiparous mothers were recruited using purposive sampling according to the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using semi-structured interview guidelines and analyzed using the Colaizzi method.
Results: The findings revealed five major themes, namely transition to motherhood, breastfeeding experiences, umbilical cord care experiences, newborn bathing experiences, and infant carrying experiences. All participants experienced significant role changes after childbirth, including changes in daily routines, sleeping patterns, and responsibilities in caring for their infants. Participants prioritized direct breastfeeding, understood its benefits for infant health and mother–infant bonding, practiced proper umbilical cord care by maintaining cleanliness and dryness, and applied safety principles when bathing and carrying their babies.
Conclusions: The study concluded that primiparous mothers undergo a complex adaptation process in caring for newborns. However, they are able to perform their maternal role with support from healthcare professionals, family members, knowledge, and practical experience, which contributes to increased confidence in providing newborn care.
