Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable, deadly disease whose treatment and care requires a lifetime. The goal of treatment and care is to control hypertension to prevent complications. There are still many hypertension sufferers who do not take hypertension medication regularly, resulting in uncontrolled blood pressure. One of the things that influences the fulfillment of medication for hypertension sufferers is family support. Family support includes esteem support, emotional support, instrumental support, and informational support.

Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and medication adherence among hypertension sufferers in Margorejo District.

Method: The research method used in this research is descriptive correlation with a cross sectional approach. The population in this study was 340 hypertensive patients in Margorejo Tempel Village, Sleman Yogyakarta and samples were taken of 5-6 people using proportional random sampling techniques. The research instrument used two questionnaires, namely the family support questionnaire and the medication adherence questionnaire. Data collection method using survey method.

Results: The results showed that 51.9% of respondents had a low level of family support and 61% of respondents showed that they had low medication adherence. Chi-square test results showed a significant relationship between family support and medication adherence (p-value 0.032:, odds ratio: 2.783).

Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the level of family support and adherence to taking medication in hypertension sufferers in Margorejo Tempel Sleman Village.
